Today we shine the spotlight directly onto the founder of Iron Born Barbershop in Southampton, Jimmy Dee. We get inside the mind of one of Southamptons top barbering talents and find out just what makes this guy tick.
What inspired you to open a barbershop, and how did you get started in the industry?
Ive always planned to open a barbershop and the inspiration was freedom. The freedom to do things in my own dark, weird way. As you can see with Iron Born its very much a place that has a lot of my personality in from the branding to the shop interior and everything else about it.
I got started in the barbering industry because I hated the job I was doing. My previous career was in logistics, mostly container route planning. Its a boring job and I'm glad I don't have to do it anymore.
I had a passing interest in barbering and thought I would teach myself to shave with a cut throat razor. So I did a bit of research and bought a Dovo straight razor.
My current speed for doing a wet shave is around the 5 minute mark, my first time shaving with a straight razor on myself took me over 3 hours. There was a lot of blood and I also sliced up one of my mums beach towels that I didn't realise she needed for her holiday the week after.
Once I was fairly proficient I then set about offering my shaving and beard services for free to local barbershops in exchange for being taught how to cut hair. I managed to land a teacher and a barbershop that took the deal and after around 8 or 10 months of working five, ten hour days in logistics and 8 hours days on Saturdays and Sundays in the barbershop I was finally ready to quit logistics and enter barbering full time.
How would you describe the atmosphere and experience that customers can expect when they visit Iron Born Barbershop?
It has a real skater-esque vibe, its very chilled out and the music is excellent! The experience of the services at Iron Born are not only great but also consistent. I think knowing that you can get the same, exceptional experience every time you visit Iron Born is the most important part of our barbershop
What do you think sets Iron Born Barbershop apart from other barbershops in Southampton, and how do you ensure that your customers receive the best possible service?
Our vibe is unique to us, its so much an extension of my personality that it is almost impossible to replicate. We make sure that we keep up to date with trends and techniques ensuring we are constantly at the forefront of the barbering industry. We also have regular training sessions in house between ourselves and also with other amazing barbers that come down to show us their skills and help us incorporate them into our daily work. Our clients will always receive the best service we can possibly deliver that is consistent.
How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques in men's grooming, and what role does education and training play in your business?
We recently took a trip to London when we attended a trade event. These are events are where barbers come together to share skills, educate and motivate each other. They're important for the development of the industry and they help those who are inclined to, stay up to date. These events and our training sessions both play an important role in our business as while other shops in and around Southampton may very well be doing interesting things, they are many many steps behind us. The other shops in Southampton at least will have to put a lot of effort into catching us up and may even never get there.
Can you share some tips and advice for people who are looking to take better care of their hair and grooming routine?
Easy, watch our video podcast and subscribe to our YouTube channel. We release videos weekly giving everyone all of our tips, tricks and advice to help them stay on top of their grooming game.
What are some of the most popular haircuts and styles that customers ask for at Iron Born Barbershop, and why do you think these styles are so popular?
Without a doubt it's the skin fade. It's become an absolute staple in the hair game and I don't see it going anywhere any time soon. I think its popularity is down to social status, having a fresh fade is a status symbol for people and it also makes them feel fresh and comfortable.
Can you tell us about any exciting new developments or services that Iron Born Barbershop has planned for the future?
Well as I mentioned we have our own YouTube channel with some great advice. We are looking to expand on that and really grow the channel with some very exciting additions and upgrades.
We also have plans for some new services that we think will be very beneficial along with some new products to add to our line. So plenty to look forward to!
What do you enjoy most about owning and operating a barbershop, and what do you think are the most important qualities for success in this industry?
I love the social aspect of the shop. Clients come in and talk to us about their lives and aspirations, we see them out and about and it's nice to feel like a central part of the community.
How do you prioritize customer satisfaction and feedback at Iron Born Barbershop, and what steps do you take to ensure that every customer has a positive experience?
We always try and encourage people to leave honest reviews on google and comments on our posts. That way we can address any issues anybody may be having and rectify them as soon as possible.
Finally, can you share any advice or words of wisdom for aspiring barbers or salon owners who are just starting in the industry?
The most important thing is to keep yourself motivated, learn as much as you can and whenever you move on to another shop, ensure its a shop with a higher calibre so that you are constantly challenged.
